Throw Darts at a Cheesecake
Published in Hardcover by Walker & Co (March, 1999)
Author: Denise Dietz
Average review score:

I Agree with UGH!
If you want a murder mystery that reads like a Weight Watcher propoganda indoctrination, then read this book. Every page is filled with Weight Watchers spiel. You can tell the writer lived the WW life right down to the scales and the constant water drinking. All the meeting stuff is very realistic. Yes, I am a WW backslider, so sue me.

If you want to read an interesting book filled with interesting characters, interesting conflicts and well thought out plot lines, then run and find another book. The writing style is stilted. The dialogue is bad. The writing connecting it all together is bad.

If you want to read about interesting fat people in mysterious circumstances, read Kathleen Taylor's mystery series. It's set in South Dakota with a fat crime fighter. It is hilariously well thought out and very clever.

The cheesecake is not well plotted at all. She gives a quote from Gilda Ratner in the FIRST full paragraph which tells the book title. -please- The opening page is so important. It establishes the whole premise for the book. The opening page sets the stage. It should be catchy, but certainly not reveal in the 2nd line the whole reason for the title forgoodnesssake.

I loved this one and its a MUST for weight watchers!
Okay, I admit it, I'm a Weight Watchers member and was intrigued by the plot of this book because of the focus on dieters and mystery. And to put it bluntly, I was also looking for something to keep my mind off food. And guess what? This book worked - I lost 5 pounds in the time it took to finish the book, less than a week. Every time I wanted a doughnut or a chocolate eclair, I read another chapter. Having said that, I should add that you'll love this book even if you haven't counted a single calorie in your life. It is fun trying to find out who is killing the Great Dieters of America -and why. Now I just have to get my hands on Denise Dietz's other mysteries, so I can keep my eyes on the page - and my hands out of the cookie jar!

Ugh nothing, it was GREAT!
I loved this book. In fact, I couldn't put it down until I finished it. Same for Ms. Dietz's second diet club mystery, Beat Up a Cookie. Now I'm hoping for a third in the series. Soon! I highly recommend Throw Darts at a Cheesecake. You won't be sorry you bought it, and that's a promise.

Colorado's Hot Springs
Published in Paperback by Pruett Publishing Co. (June, 1996)
Authors: Deborah Frazier and Deborah Frazier George
Average review score:

Over Exuberance
Deborah George has written a fairly comprehensive guidebook detailing most of the hot springs of Colorado. She gives in-depth history of the springs and interesting facts. _Colorado hot springs_ Entries should be approached with care; George has fallen into a guidebook trap of only saying good things in her book. From her glowing descriptions of each spring, it is very hard to separate the great springs from the mediocre ones. The few negative things she has to say are vastly outweighed by the positive thus making the entries far from unbiased. Of course, everyone has favorites and is keen to embellish a bit, but every spring in Colorado is George's favorite.
George's book also lacks reliable directions and locations. While this isn't usually a problem for developed hot springs, the undeveloped springs have proved a bit harder to find. The entry for Penny Springs has quite good directions up until the last moment, advising Hot Springers to watch for a "well used turnout [with] a very small 'C.R. 11' sign." Locating the 'well used' turnout proved to be quite a challenge requiring three laps up and down the road and another guide book. Upon closer inspection, the C.R 11 sign appears to no longer exist. This type of experience is typical of George's directions.
Deborah George provides history, folklore and some interesting facts concerning Colorado's hot springs, but don't rely on her opinion of what is good because to her they're all great.

Horribly Outdated Information
This book does a great public disservice. The information in the book has not been updated in years and is terribly outdated. Quite a bit of the information is absolutely wrong. Send the publisher a message - don't buy the book until they update it. Save your money, there are much better, current books out there such as "Hot Springs and Hot Pools of the Southwest" & Northwest - which are updated ever two years

Just what we need. RVs at wilderness hot springs
The only useful thing about this writer's books on hot springs are the USGS maps and the latitude/longitudes. I bought a book of his nearly 20 years ago and was thoroughly dissatisfied, & was incensed when it seemed to me he was more interested in providing info for the land yacht crowd. I wonder if his book alleging that the lunar landings were hoaxes is any better. I doubt it. He probably denies the Holocaust took place, too. If you want a book on hot springs, check out Jayson Loam's books. They are much better. If you want info on faked lunar landings, get the movie "Capricorn One."

Interesting especially for RVers who like hot tubbing
We have tried one hot spring listing and enjoyed our hot soak, found one shut down, one remodeling and one a bit too pricey for us. Would like to see some reference to actual costs rather than than reasonable or free or deluxe. One place inacessible without 4 wheel drive but we will keep trying, the maps are good.

The Spring
Published in Hardcover by Simon & Schuster (August, 1996)
Author: Clifford Irving
Average review score:

Forget it.
A chance for a really interesting story becomes, in Irving's hands, a watery, weary and hackneyed piece of writing. Here was an opportunity to delve into an interesting subject, instead Irving throws characters and plot into a jumble of ultimately boring and disappointing reading.

I'd enter Zero Stars if there was a zero
That Clifford Irving's writing has become slack of belly with his last few books is clearly evident in this sorry novel. Irving certainly proved himself better as a hoaxer. And that a writer who had such promise has dropped to this sloppy level of writing is a shame. A trite book.

Lumpy, disjointed. Disappointing.
Clifford Irving can write better. This was an opportunity for a well-told story; instead it is the work of an amateur. Not up tp Irving's usual standard.

I wish for a better map
The problem with this map is mainly that the street names are so small. A bigger map would have been better. Also, the map is already out of date. The city of Colorado Springs is changing so rapidly that some new roads aren't even on the map (according to this map, Powers blvd. ends on Woodman, in reality it goes to Research and may extend all the way to I-25 in the future).

Steamboat Single Tracks : The Mountain Biking Guide to Steamboat Springs, Colorado
Published in Paperback by Fat Tire Pr (June, 2002)
Authors: Tom Barnhart and Chuck Hinton
Average review score:

BUYER BEWARE!!!!
We bought this book for a trip to Steamboat in July 2003. My wife is a beginning rider, so we picked a ride classified as "easy", and described as fire roads/dirt roads throughout. That may have been the case when this book was first written in 1993, but 10 years later, there were almost no signs, and about half the course had regressed to seriously overgrown single-track. It took three of us (two with substantial outdoor and hiking experience) 6 hours to finish what should have been a 2 hour ride, as we kept getting lost and having to back track. The authors say they revise this book: DON'T BELIEVE THEM.
